Why Artists Trust Pottery Pulse

Compact Dual-Media Multipurpose Kiln — Paragon Caldera XL

Description

Built for artists, educators, and studios needing expanded vertical firing space in a compact tabletop kiln, the Paragon Caldera XL delivers fast heat-up times, precise digital control, and reliable high-temperature performance for ceramics, fused glass, enameling, PMC firing, porcelain, china painting, and specialty mixed-media applications. Its taller chamber design and modular expansion system make it ideal for dimensional projects, glaze testing, jewelry work, and repeat firing cycles where flexibility and efficiency matter most.

The Paragon Caldera XL combines the versatility of the original Caldera platform with additional vertical capacity for artists working with taller molds, layered kiln furniture setups, small sculptures, dimensional glass projects, and precious metal clay forms. Designed for home studios, classrooms, workshops, and professional makers alike, the Caldera XL offers broad firing flexibility in a highly space-efficient design that operates from standard household power.

Capable of firing up to 2350°F (1287°C), the Caldera XL supports an impressive range of materials and techniques including stoneware, porcelain, metal clay, glass fusing, china painting, enameling, glaze testing, and specialty ceramic applications. Whether firing silver clay jewelry, slumping glass over molds, testing ceramic surfaces, or experimenting with mixed-media techniques, the Caldera XL delivers dependable thermal performance and precise digital control in one adaptable platform.

Inside the 7.5" wide x 5.5" long x 8.75" high firing chamber, 2.5" insulating firebrick provides excellent heat retention and controlled cooling performance. The kiln’s L-shaped notched firebrick corner joints add long-term structural strength beyond traditional mitered or butted brick designs commonly found in competing tabletop kilns.

A durable top-fired heating element is recessed into protective grooves to help extend element life while supporting even heat distribution throughout the chamber. The kiln’s reversible firebrick base further extends long-term durability by allowing users to reverse the firing surface when wear eventually occurs.

Like the original Caldera, the Caldera XL features a modular two-piece design compatible with Paragon’s optional expansion collars. Artists can adapt the kiln to specific firing applications using optional collars such as:

  • Caldera-X Collar – Adds additional firing depth
  • Caldera-BC Collar – Includes a bead door for annealing mandrels
  • Caldera-E Collar – Adds vertical space for enameling and taller projects

Optional configurations are also available with a high-temperature viewing window for glass artists or a lid safety switch for additional operational safety.

The Caldera XL is equipped with the SENTINEL Touch Xpress touchscreen controller, offering advanced Ramp-Hold programming capabilities for glass, ceramics, metal clay, and mixed-media firing schedules. Real-time temperature monitoring, programmable hold times, and customizable firing profiles provide exceptional flexibility for both technical and creative firing applications. A sheathed Type-K thermocouple ensures accurate temperature readings and dependable long-term performance.

Despite its expanded firing capacity, the Caldera XL remains remarkably compact and portable, making it an excellent choice for classrooms, home studios, educational workshops, and artists needing a versatile companion kiln alongside larger production equipment.

The Caldera XL is especially well-suited for glass artists, ceramicists, jewelry makers, educators, and metal clay artists seeking a compact kiln capable of handling a broad range of creative and technical firing applications. Its combination of vertical capacity, modular flexibility, and professional-level digital control makes it an exceptional option for both beginning artists and experienced professionals.

Current lead times

Please contact us to reach out to the manufacturer for an estimated lead time.

There is currently a firebrick supply constraint affecting several kiln manufacturers, including this model. Because of that, lead times have been extended and can fluctuate.

Rather than guess, we can confirm the current production timeline with the factory before you place your order so you know exactly what to expect.

FAQs - Configuring Your Kiln

There are certain selections you must choose. And then there are options you can click on or ignore. The answers below should help you make the best choices for you.

Which Kiln Voltage Should I Select?

Higher voltage means lower amperage draw and greater efficiency, which can save money long term. 240V and 208V cost the same—most home studios use 240V, while 208V is common in schools or large facilities. Amperage refers to the amount of electrical current a kiln draws—higher amps require heavier wiring and breakers.

What's The Difference Between Single-Phase and Three-Phase?

Single-phase is what almost all homes have. If your facility has three-phase, you can choose either—but three-phase is typically the better long-term option due to smoother power and improved efficiency.

Which Relay Option Do I Need?

Mechanical relays are standard and reliable. Solid-state relays (SSR) offer silent operation, faster cycling, greater precision, and longer lifespan—ideal for frequent or high-accuracy firings.

What Are The Differences Between Kiln Controllers?

The following controllers are used across kilns sold by Pottery Pulse. Not all models offer every option—available controllers are listed on each product page. Some kilns include only the standard controller, while most allow upgrades for added precision and convenience.

Olympic Kilns

  • Infinite Switch – Manual dial control for simple heat adjustments.
  • KilnStar – Digital controller with preset and user-defined programs.
  • Genesis – Advanced touchscreen interface with Wi-Fi and data logging.

Evenheat Kilns

  • Icon – Digital 3-button controller for straightforward firing.
  • RampMaster II – Manual digital controller for ceramic kilns; flexible ramp/hold programming.
  • RampMaster 3 – Updated version for glass kilns with refined interface.
  • Icon+ – Enhanced digital control with expanded profiles and precision.
  • TAP II – Smart touchscreen controller with Wi-Fi, data tracking, and remote access.

Hot Shot Kilns

  • Novus – “Set & Go” controller: set a target temperature and it does the rest (no segments).
  • Spark – Entry-level touchscreen controller with intuitive operation and limited program control.
  • TAP II – Smart touchscreen controller with Wi-Fi and real-time monitoring.

Jen-Ken Kilns

  • Orton AF3P 3-Button – Reliable and straightforward for basic firing.
  • Orton AutoFire 4000 12-Key – Expanded program capacity and fine control.
  • Orton AutoFire Slide Touchscreen – Modern, responsive touchscreen interface.
  • TAP II Touchscreen Smart Controller – Wi-Fi connectivity and real-time data tracking.

What Are Collars For?

Not all kilns can use a collar, but Olympic’s Hot Box kilns can be ordered with a collar to expand versatility. A blank collar simply adds height to the firing chamber, while a bead collar adds the same height and includes a built-in bead or annealing door for quick-access lampwork projects.

What Does The Power Interrupt Switch Do?

This safety feature automatically cuts power to the heating elements whenever the kiln lid or door is opened. It prevents accidental burns, protects elements, and resumes power only when safely closed. (Also called an automatic lid shutoff on Olympic kilns.)
