Dual-Opening Clamshell Glass Fusing Kiln — Paragon CS14D

Description

The Paragon CS14D Dual Clamshell Glass Fusing Kiln is designed for glass artists, educators, jewelry makers, and creative studios seeking maximum flexibility when loading, arranging, and firing glass projects. Combining Paragon's innovative clamshell design with a separate independently operated lid, the CS14D provides two distinct methods of chamber access, allowing artists to work more comfortably and efficiently across a wide range of glass fusing, slumping, casting, and decorative glass applications.

The CS Series was developed specifically for artists who need complete visibility and easy access when assembling delicate glass projects. Unlike traditional top-loading kilns, the CS14D offers full clamshell access by allowing the chamber walls and lid assembly to lift upward from the base. This design provides unobstructed access to the kiln floor, making it easier to position glass pieces, arrange frit and stringers, build layered compositions, and load molds without reaching over kiln walls.

What sets the CS14D apart is its dual-opening design. In addition to full clamshell operation, the top lid can be opened independently, allowing convenient top-loading access without opening the entire kiln body. This added flexibility is especially useful when loading slumping molds, making adjustments to projects, or accessing specific areas of the firing chamber while minimizing disruption to carefully arranged work.

The kiln's 14" x 14" square firing chamber provides ample space for fused glass tiles, jewelry, ornaments, decorative panels, small bowls, and layered artwork. The chamber can accommodate multiple projects simultaneously, including up to nine 4" x 4" glass tiles in a single firing.

Top-mounted heating elements are installed in pinless element grooves for clean operation and even heat distribution across the firing chamber. This design eliminates the dust and debris associated with traditional element pins while promoting efficient radiant heating and consistent firing results.

The CS14D features a counterweight-assisted lifting system that makes both clamshell and lid operation smooth and effortless. Mechanical latches secure each opening mode independently, while an extended rear base provides stability whenever the kiln is open. Mar-proof rubber feet help protect work surfaces while providing stable support during operation.

Control is provided by the SENTINEL Touch Xpress touchscreen controller with advanced Ramp-Hold programming capabilities. Easily create and store custom firing schedules, adjust heating and cooling rates, and monitor real-time kiln temperatures through the intuitive touchscreen interface. Whether performing tack fusing, full fusing, slumping, annealing, or decorative glass techniques, the controller provides the precision required for repeatable results.

Built for long-term reliability, the CS14D features a welded steel lid cover, reversible firebrick floor, heavy-duty steel base, stainless steel-sheathed thermocouple, and dual mechanical relays that help distribute electrical loads and extend relay life. An integrated power switch allows users to completely shut down the controller when the kiln is not in use.

Controller

The Paragon CS14D features the SENTINEL Touch Xpress Controller with advanced touchscreen Ramp-Hold programming capabilities. Easily create and store custom firing schedules, control heating and cooling rates, adjust hold times, and monitor real-time chamber temperatures with precision and repeatability.

Dual-Opening Design

The CS14D offers exceptional loading flexibility through its unique dual-opening design:

Full Clamshell Access

The kiln body lifts upward from the base, providing unobstructed access to the entire kiln floor for project assembly, mold placement, and loading delicate glass artwork.

Independent Top Lid

The lid can be opened separately from the chamber walls, allowing convenient top-loading access when working with slumping molds, making project adjustments, or accessing specific areas of the firing chamber.

Optional Upgrades

Ceramic Fiber Roof

Upgrade the standard firebrick roof to a lightweight ceramic fiber roof for faster heat-up times, improved energy efficiency, and reduced lid weight. The ceramic fiber design helps the kiln respond more quickly to programmed firing schedules while making operation easier during loading and unloading.

Custom Color Options

Available in multiple factory color options at no additional charge, allowing artists to personalize their kiln to match their studio environment.

FAQs - Configuring Your Kiln

There are certain selections you must choose. And then there are options you can click on or ignore. The answers below should help you make the best choices for you.

Which Kiln Voltage Should I Select?

Higher voltage means lower amperage draw and greater efficiency, which can save money long term. 240V and 208V cost the same—most home studios use 240V, while 208V is common in schools or large facilities. Amperage refers to the amount of electrical current a kiln draws—higher amps require heavier wiring and breakers.

What's The Difference Between Single-Phase and Three-Phase?

Single-phase is what almost all homes have. If your facility has three-phase, you can choose either—but three-phase is typically the better long-term option due to smoother power and improved efficiency.

Which Relay Option Do I Need?

Mechanical relays are standard and reliable. Solid-state relays (SSR) offer silent operation, faster cycling, greater precision, and longer lifespan—ideal for frequent or high-accuracy firings.

What Are The Differences Between Kiln Controllers?

The following controllers are used across kilns sold by Pottery Pulse. Not all models offer every option—available controllers are listed on each product page. Some kilns include only the standard controller, while most allow upgrades for added precision and convenience.

Olympic Kilns

  • Infinite Switch – Manual dial control for simple heat adjustments.
  • KilnStar – Digital controller with preset and user-defined programs.
  • Genesis – Advanced touchscreen interface with Wi-Fi and data logging.

Evenheat Kilns

  • Icon – Digital 3-button controller for straightforward firing.
  • RampMaster II – Manual digital controller for ceramic kilns; flexible ramp/hold programming.
  • RampMaster 3 – Updated version for glass kilns with refined interface.
  • Icon+ – Enhanced digital control with expanded profiles and precision.
  • TAP II – Smart touchscreen controller with Wi-Fi, data tracking, and remote access.

Hot Shot Kilns

  • Novus – “Set & Go” controller: set a target temperature and it does the rest (no segments).
  • Spark – Entry-level touchscreen controller with intuitive operation and limited program control.
  • TAP II – Smart touchscreen controller with Wi-Fi and real-time monitoring.

Jen-Ken Kilns

  • Orton AF3P 3-Button – Reliable and straightforward for basic firing.
  • Orton AutoFire 4000 12-Key – Expanded program capacity and fine control.
  • Orton AutoFire Slide Touchscreen – Modern, responsive touchscreen interface.
  • TAP II Touchscreen Smart Controller – Wi-Fi connectivity and real-time data tracking.

What Are Collars For?

Not all kilns can use a collar, but Olympic’s Hot Box kilns can be ordered with a collar to expand versatility. A blank collar simply adds height to the firing chamber, while a bead collar adds the same height and includes a built-in bead or annealing door for quick-access lampwork projects.

What Does The Power Interrupt Switch Do?

This safety feature automatically cuts power to the heating elements whenever the kiln lid or door is opened. It prevents accidental burns, protects elements, and resumes power only when safely closed. (Also called an automatic lid shutoff on Olympic kilns.)
