The Paragon KM14 Knife Making Kiln is designed for knifemakers, bladesmiths, educators, and small fabrication shops seeking professional-grade heat treating performance in a compact, efficient package. A trusted favorite since 1986, the KM14 offers the ideal balance of chamber capacity, precision temperature control, and workshop-friendly sizing for makers producing everyday carry knives, hunting knives, culinary blades, and other specialty metal components up to 14.5" in length.
For many bladesmiths, bringing heat treating in-house is one of the most important steps toward improving quality, consistency, and craftsmanship. The Paragon KM14 provides complete control over normalization cycles, hardening temperatures, tempering schedules, soak times, and experimental heat treating processes. Whether working with familiar steels or exploring new alloys, the KM14 allows makers to refine their techniques and produce repeatable, professional results without relying on outside heat treating services.
Sized specifically for custom knife work, the KM14 offers a spacious chamber measuring 5.5" wide, 4.3" high, and 14.5" deep. Its versatile design makes it an excellent choice for individual makers, small production shops, educational programs, and anyone upgrading from an entry-level heat treating setup.
The kiln's 3" firebrick insulation provides excellent thermal efficiency and stable chamber temperatures throughout the firing cycle. This helps improve temperature consistency while reducing energy consumption and supporting precise heat treating performance. Recessed heating elements are installed in precision-machined grooves to help extend element life and simplify future maintenance.
The KM14 features the SENTINEL Touch Xpress touchscreen controller with fully customizable Ramp-Hold programming capabilities. Users can create, store, and repeat custom heat treating schedules while monitoring real-time chamber temperatures through an intuitive touchscreen interface designed specifically for thermal processing applications.
A solid-state relay system comes standard, providing quiet operation, enhanced temperature accuracy, and improved long-term reliability compared to traditional mechanical relays. The SSR system is paired with a heat sink and mechanical backup relay for dependable operation in demanding workshop environments. A built-in safety door switch automatically removes power from the heating elements whenever the door is opened.
Built with a durable steel exterior and integrated stand, the KM14 is designed to withstand the daily demands of active knifemaking shops, training programs, and fabrication environments. Its compact footprint allows it to fit comfortably into smaller workspaces while still delivering the performance expected from a professional heat treating furnace.
Controller
The Paragon KM14 features the SENTINEL Touch Xpress Controller with advanced touchscreen Ramp-Hold programming capabilities. Easily create and store custom heat treating schedules, control soak times and cooling cycles, and monitor real-time chamber temperatures with precision and repeatability.
Optional Upgrades
Gas Injection Flow Meter
Available as either a kit or factory-installed option, the Gas Injection Flow Meter introduces inert gas such as argon or nitrogen into the chamber to help reduce oxidation and scale formation during heat treating cycles. By displacing oxygen within the firing chamber, the system can reduce or eliminate the need for stainless steel foil while improving blade finish quality, minimizing cleanup, and helping preserve sharp grind lines and edge geometry.
Solenoid Valve Upgrade
Works alongside the Gas Injection Flow Meter to automate gas flow during firing cycles. Gas can be programmed to flow only during specific firing segments, improving efficiency, reducing gas consumption, increasing safety, and supporting highly repeatable heat treating environments.
Knifemaking Heat Treating Kit
Designed to keep blades upright, properly spaced, and securely positioned throughout the firing cycle for more consistent heat distribution and improved heat treating results.
Swing Door or Drop Door Configuration
The KM14 is available with either a side-swing door or a drop-door design. The swing door provides traditional side access and works well in tighter spaces. The drop-door configuration creates a convenient loading surface for blades, fixtures, and tooling during furnace loading and unloading.
