Olympic Kilns Annealing and Crucible Kilns

The Importance of Annealing in Glass Firing

Annealing is a crucial phase in the glass-firing process. This step involves gradually cooling the glass in a kiln to relieve internal stresses that develop as the glass forms. Without proper annealing, glass can become fragile and prone to cracking or shattering when exposed to even slight temperature changes or mechanical impacts. By carefully controlling the cooling process, annealing enhances the durability and strength of the glass, ensuring it can withstand the rigors of everyday use.

Olympic kilns, equipped with advanced electronic controllers, are designed to manage this process with precision. These controllers allow the kiln to heat the glass to the desired shape or form and then gradually reduce the temperature to the optimal annealing point, effectively hardening the glass for long-lasting resilience.

In contrast, a crucible kiln is engineered to maintain extremely high temperatures for extended periods, specifically for melting glass. Once the glass reaches its molten state, it can be gathered and shaped, typically through glassblowing techniques, to create intricate and artistic forms.
